* To select a pattern, first choose the desired individual pattern, letter, or numeral to he sewn (6) on the display panel and note the key number under It (7). ♦ After turning machine power on, use buttons (1), (2), (Cont’d) (4), and (5) to enter the key number into the machine. ♦ If pattern selected has a key number from 0 to 9, the left hand side of the pattern selection indicator must be reduced to zero at which time it will go dark. * if desired, only buttons (4) and (5) may be used since holding in either button will let the machine count up or down between 0 and 99, Buttons (1) and (2) make selection quicker by increasing or decreasing the entry of the key in steps of 10 units at a time. * When the key number appears or the selection indicator, the machine is ready to sew most selected patterns continuously as long as speed controller is depressed. • When single letters or numbers are selected, the microcomputer only allows the pattern to be sewn once, then it automatically shuts off. These patterns must be used in conjunction with the memory functions, described later in this book, in order to be sewn more than once. REMEMBER, when machine is first turned on, it will be ready to sew straight stitch and will show that pattern on the selection indicator, NOT a key number. Use of the arrowhead controls will Immediately change the display on the selection indicator to a key number. It is recommended to make a sample using the same fabric and interfacing before sewing on the garment.

Fine Tuning Patterns Patterns are stored in the machine along with a pre programmed stitch width and length. Use of pattern as stored will produce an acceptable stitch under most sewing conditions. However, there may be circumstances when modifications might be advantageous. The fine tuning controls allow these changes.

4. SEWING TIPS AND APPLICATIONS

Fabric, Thread and Needle Table Your fabric will deterrnino the choice of a needle and thread. The following table is a practical guide to needle and thread selection. Always refer to it before a new sewing project. And be sure to use the same size and type of thread in the bobbin as in the top thread supply.

* Use with standard sewing thread in bobbin.

31

Most fabrics can be placed tinder the foot by raising the presser foot lifter (1) to its normal "up” position (2) where it locks in place. When using bulky fabric, multiple fabric layers, or an embroidery hoop, raise the lifter to the highrise position (3), thus increasing the space between the foot and the needle plate.

*

Lower presser foot lifter all the way down and the machine is ready to sew.

♦ To keep seams straight, use one of the guidelines on the needle plate. •

The most commonly used line (1) for a 5/8 inch {18 cm) seam allowance is extended onto the slide plate.

To start a seam, place fabric under presser foot so needle will first penetrate 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) from starting edge of fabric. Align the right edge with one of the guide lines on the throat plate. Lower the presser foot.

*

Reverse-stitch using reverse button to the edge of fabric then release button for forward stitching.

When seam is completed, hold in reverse button and stitch for 3-4 stitches to lock seam. « Raise needle and presser foot to remove fabric from machine. Cut thread using thread cutter on face plate.

Guiding Fabric Most fabrics need only to be guided in front of the presser foot. Some fabrics, however, require support while being stitched.

♦ For tricot and other similar synthetic knits, apply gentle tension by holding fabric fight in front and back of presser foot during sewing. DO NOT pull fabric or needle may break*

♦ For elasticized fabric, stretch lace, and knits with an unusual amount of elasticity, hold as with tricot but apply firm tension in front and back of presser foot to stretch the seam as the stitches are being sewn.

Basting

Pin basting and hand basting are easy ways to make temporary seams before machine sewing. This machine also allows quick and easy power basting using the electronic con* trol systems. ♦ Insert pins at stitching line, NEVER place pins on the underside of fabric in contact with the feed. DO NOT sew over pins; remove them immediately before stitching.

Machine Basting

♦ Where tacking stitch is desired, tap speed controller (3) quickly. Machine will sew one stitch and stop. ♦ With needle in the “up” position, foot will automatically be raised off the fabric. Reposition fabric BY HAND, and tap speed controller once again. IMPORTANT: DO NOT attempt machine basting with the presser foot lifter in the raised position while sewing! Raising the foot manually releases all tension on the needle thread and improper stitching or jamming may result. ♦ Repeat operation along seam line spacing basting stitches as desired until end of seam is reached,

Blindstitching

Select blind stitch by pressing the appropriate instant selection button.

Prepare the hem by folding and pressing as usual. If the hem is basted to hold it in place, as shown, be sure to place the basting at least 1/2 Inch (1,2 cm) below the fop edge of the hem allowance.

* With the wrong side of fabric up, turn the hem under creating a soft fold from the top*edge of hem. Pin or baste all three layers together. ♦ Attach blind stitch presser foot to machine as in Chapter 2. * Position the hem under the presser foot with the soft fold (1) resting against the wall of the foot (2), as shown. * Adjust the foot by turning the small knob (3) to make sure the straight stitches fall on the edge of the hem and the zig-zag stitches just pierce the soft fold.

Lower the presser foot and begin sewing. Guide the hem edge in a straight line and feed the soft fold evenly against the wall of the foot. If pins were used, remove them immediately before stitching. • DO NOT sew over pins!

If required, the stitch density can be adjusted by activating the stitch length override but- ton (5). Adjust stitch length control (6) and retest until desired appearance is achieved.

38

Also, if required, the width of the buttonhole can be adjusted to sew wider or narrower buttonholes to suit various sizes of buttons and different weights of fabric.

Adjusting Width

To change the standard width press override button (7), adjust override control (8) and retest until desired appearance is achieved. This will not affect the cutting space which will stay 1 mm width as programmed buttonhole.

Programming Length When you are satisfied with balance, density and width, proceed to; • Mark position and length of buttonhole on fabric sample. * Line up the marks on the foot (9) with the marks on the fabric and lower foot. If for any reason the stitch length or the balance must be changed, the programming sequence must be repeated.

Press button (1) once.

« The symbol (b1) is shown in the pattern display window and red indicator (10) will be lit. 39

Programming Length (Confd)

* Depress speed controller slowly to start sewing right side of buttonhole. When the stitching reaches the rear mark on the fabric (A), stop machine and press center button (2). The symbol (b2) will appear. •

Start sewing again to complete the left side of the buttonhole.

♦ When stitching reaches starting line at the front of the buttonhole (B), stop machine and press center button (2) a second time. The symbol (b3) will appear.

• •

The machine will complete the buttonhole and automatically stop. The red indicator (10) will start to blink and the symbol (bh) will appear to indicate that the buttonhole is stored in the memory. Remove sample fabric from machine, cut slit in buttonhole, and confirm size with button. If size and appearance are acceptable, buttonholes may be repeated on finished garment as follows:

Programming Length (cont’d)

♦ Line up buttonhole position marks on gar* men! with marks on foot as before. ♦ Press button (1) and start sewing. The machine will stop automatically upon completion of the buttonhole. ♦ Should it be desired to perform other stitching functions, the user may do so without disturbing the buttonhole In memory. The programmed buttonhole may be reselected at a later time by pushing button (1). The symbol (bh) will indicate that there is a program In the memory. Note: If stitch length and balance were used to program the buttonhole, they must be reset to same position when buttonhole is reselected after having performed other stitching functions which required different stitch length or balance setting. Relatively little movement of either of these controls will cause enough stitch length change to produce different length buttonholes and/or failure to close properly. The programmed buttonhole will remain stored in the memory as long as the power remains on or until the user wishes to erase it by using the buttonhole "CLR” button.

Clearing Memory

♦ The “CLR” function only works if machine is in the buttonhole mode of operation.

Button Sewing

To sew on buttons, first attach the button sewing foot (1) to the machine by following instructions under “Replacing Screw-on Presser Feet*' in Chapter 2. With the garment in place urider the foot, place button under the foot. Guide the needle into the lefthand hole and turn the handwheel and make the first stitch. When the needle comes out of the button, adjust the width fine tuning control so needle will accurately enter the right hand hole. The speed controller may then be depressed and the machine allowed to take about six stitches.

For 4 hole button, rotate garment and repeat. Remove work from machine and tie off both threads on the under side of the fabric to secure button.
