Hello and welcome to the May edition of Scrapbook Trends! I don't know about you, but the arrival of the month of May is well appreciated this year. After such a dark, cold winter, May has seemed a very long time coming. So, why all of the excitement? Apart from it being my first wedding anniversary, it is also a month during which we enjoy two bank holidays....and we are all ready for the rest! Really ready! So, with extended weekend breaks in mind, we have been working hard behind the scenes to put together a great edition of Scrapbook Trends for you to browse at your leisure. One weekend this month, I have pencilled in a plan to tidy up and reorganise some of my scrapbooking space. After reading our 'Real Life' feature by Jerri Hush (starting on page 18), I have been inspired to take before, during and after photos. If I think back to when I started this hobby I now realise I have missed an important change in my life. It would have been fun to look back at the limited supplies I started with and how my 'collection' has grown. 'This Feeds my Creative Soul' by Christine Drumheller on page 23, is a lovely layout showing her own crafting space and what it has done for her life.

Page 82 sees the beginning of our section on using bling, and I have been inspired by Anabelle O'Malleys 'On his Play List' layout (Page 86). Her use of gems and colour on a layout about her sons music choices is just perfect; but, Annabelle has also reminded me that I need to take time to 'quiz' my boys this month and keep up to date with their favourite things lists! Another layout I think you will love is April Fosters 'Shades of Summer' layout (Page 61). It shows how you can easily combine two of this year's trends- stitching and banners. The zigzag stitching used as the banner string not only looks fabulous...it combines the two 'halves' of the layout beautifully. For other great stitching ideas head over to the start of our stitching feature on page 58. Also this month, we have joined up with the team at Pencil Lines (www.pencillines.com) to work with 5 great layout sketches provided by Pencil Lines founder, Anna Bowkis. Take a look at how different two people's interpretation of the same sketch can be (from page 92). I had a go at his challenge myself and loved working (and being inspired) by a sketch. It would be a great starting point for you too if you are planning some scrapbooking fun on your bank holiday weekends.

10 [Blogs We Love ] Around cyberspace this month I have noticed more and more people are embracing the idea that scrapbooking can form a crossover with other crafts. People are re-learning forgotten skills, in particular, needlecraft. I have seen a trend for using sewing related items… be it in the manufacturers products or the crafters finished work - and this months ‘hot trend’ is for dress forms.

I love that Amanda has photographed her workspace while she’s in the middle of a project. This picture is what we’re all about – real life! A straight stitch around the photo mat coordinates perfectly with the dashed lines on the background paper, while simple flower embellishments balance the weight of the dark mat. To make your own, cut flowers from patterned paper and adhere them to flowers punched from vintage notebook paper. I love how our creative styles spill over into every aspect of our lives – even the way we decorate and organize. Valerie’s scrapbooking space is filled with vintage buckets, cans, and even tin picnic baskets. She uses these antique containers to house her collection of embellishments and ephemera.

Paige cleverly uses hand-stitched lines to walk us through the different aspects of her creative space. What’s the story behind your album?

I created this album using engagement photos of my husband and I, taken at the local carnival. The song lyrics as journaling are special to us because we listened to this song the night we first met, and now my husband sings it to me almost every day. When I found the old postcards at an antique store I was so excited because I knew right away what I would do with them. I love that not only do they have little love notes on the front, but they’re also unique to us, mixing the old with the newness of our relationship. How long did the album take you to make?

It only took about two hours to create the entire album because I went with a theme and used corresponding products on each page. 40

What is your hope for this album?

I gave the album to my husband at our rehearsal dinner the night before our wedding and it’s now on display in the main living area of our home. I hope that one day my husband and I will look back at this album and remember how it all started for us, and how much we loved each other right from the beginning. 1 Gather 6-10 thick, vintage postcards. (If you can’t find any, print vintage images on cream cardstock; glue it to chipboard for extra thickness.) 2 Embellish the images with fabric, ribbon, etc., and add photos and printed journaling to the back of the pages. 3 Punch two holes through the left hand side of each page, using an eyelet setter or a Crop-A-Dile. 4 Fasten the finished pages together with binder rings. Mixing your own handwriting with letter stickers and typed journaling gives your project an eclectic feel, while also preserving a little piece of “you.” Don’t be afraid to alter. Cheryl added cute little details to the images on the vintage flashcards, like a fabric ribbon bow on the girl’s head and pieces of colourful fabric on the straws. Every scrap has a purpose! If you’re thinking about throwing away your leftover bits of fabric and paper, consider storing them in a cute box or bag for projects like this where you only need bits of colour here and there. Congrats on your new marriage Cheryl, we wish you all the best! 41

To me, heritage is all about relationships, family memories, and messages of hope and truth for those to come. It could be your ethnic history, your legacy of faith, your learned habits (neuroses?), your family’s history, or anything else that connects you to those who came before you.

It also reminded me of the importance of recording my personal history. I value the thoughts and legacy he left, and I hope the stories I’m leaving for my own posterity will become a cherished history for them as well.
